British Import Blanket
British wool blankets were imported by the thousands all during the war, beginning in 1861 until the capture of Fort Fisher in 1865.
It appears from records that all Blockade Runners carried bales of blankets in their cargos.
Blankets were in bales of 20 to 50 blankets wrapped in double canvas or tarpaulin with iron hoops around them. S. Issac & Campell co. as well as other sources supplied Blankets by the thousands in white, butternut and different shades of blue grey.
This blanket we have chosen to reproduce, is made and designed by N.J. Sekela, he has spent a great deal of time working to get the weave and colors correct, and this is the result.
This wool blanket weighs about 3 1/2 pounds and measures 74” X 63”.
This blanket was also imported by the state of North Carolina with the addition of the property mark of the letters “NC” stitched in red yarn on the center of the blanket, an original is pictured in “ECHOES OF GLORY”. We do not offer the red stitched NC on the blankets at this time. These blankets are reproductions of the Confederate government issue blanket as well as other states issue. This blanket is ideal for use in all theaters from Texas to Virginia.
Note the edges are left “raw” as per the originals, you can easily remove a stand of yarn and sew up the end to prevent fraying if you desire or leave it “raw”. We are very excited to offer this as we requested these to be developed and made for us to offer.
