"SURRENDER AT APPOMOTTOX" by Tom Lovell
Tom Lovell painted the original in April of 1965 for the National Geographic Society, the original was sold by Christies Auction House of New York for $80,500.00 in 2012! This lithograph of the original is in my opinion the best that has been made of the surrender scene in the McLean house at Appomattox. This moment in American history is often taken for granted as Lee could have dispersed his soldiers to continue fighting a guerrilla war, as some of his men suggested. Lee however thought it was best to end the war for the Army of Northern Virginia. The surrender at Appomattox was the beginning of the end of hostilities.
The framed artwork measures 2”X21 1/2” inches. The frame has some scratches on it which can be seen in the last photos. Artist Tom Lovell lived from 1909 to 1997 so I do not believe these will be available again. I have also included in photos a photo of Lee and Grant for comparison to the painting they are not included.
