#701NS Wooden Match Safe

$6.00

To the most advanced students of the material culture, a match safe automatically conjures up commercial hard rubber or brass items. Those items have been so closely identified with the word, that one never considers that some other type of match safe existed. The ever present "lucifer" brand of match case, however dubious, has presented the only other alternative. The item that we are now offering, not only served as a match safe, but also as the original packaging that period matches were shipped in. The most solid evidence was found in the excavation of the steamboat ARABIA, which had crates of matches in the original wooden match safes.

A private collector has originals of this exact safe for sale. Click here for a look.

Because of safety regulations, modern matches do not strike as easily. We have included a striker sticker than can be easily hidden. Alway use precautions when handling matches. See additional information. In the last photo are some originals from the steamboat ARABIA.

Unlike period matches, today’s have a safety feature which makes it all but impossible to strike anywhere. We have included a striker that can be easily hid. I put mine on the inside although there is evidence that they were on the bottom. Keep in mind, that you do not want the heads of your matches touching the striker. I put my matches in upside down.
