#1000NS Hospital Steward Chevrons

$34.00

“In the fall of 1851, General Order #53 was published which described chevrons for Hospital Stewards. While the Hospital Steward of that time enlisted as a private, the regulations put him at the pay and responsibility of a sergeant. An addendum to the Regulations for the Uniform and Dress of the U.S. Army that authorized a “Half Chevron” consisting of a green background with yellow trim and a Caduceus to denote the rank of the Hospital Steward.”

#1000NS Illustrating the variety of Hospital Steward Chevrons, we are adding this example which was worn by a member of the First Maine. Embroidered on dark green velvet in dead gold bullion, this chevron bears all the hallmarks of a privately purchased example. Based on an original that was in the Don Troiani archives.

#1001NS Authenticity is based upon historical accuracy seemingly religious attention to detail. Such is the case with this reproduction Hospital Steward Chevron. Many of the once that have traditionally been offered in the hobby have been made only looking at the text of the regulations, none, to this date, have been based on orignal examples.

We have endeavoured to not only offer ones with historical fidelity, but to offer the variations that were available at the time. In this example, we have not only duplicated the fabric, and the embroidery, but also the painted oilcloth backing of the original.

#1002NS f there is a a statement that typifies the aesthetic of the 19th century, it is the inclusion of elaborate gold borders and scroll work. Clearly one of the most handsome chevrons offered to the living history community, no detail was overlooked in their making. Hand embroidered on Kochan Phillips broadcloth, in both dead and bright bullion, this chevron takes on the appearance of sculpted art.

The original was sold through Historical Auctions, it truly is an honor to be offering this to the living history community.

#1003NS Judging by pictures taken in the field, there was not only a wide variety of Hospital Steward chevrons during the war, but varieties existed within a particlar unit. This example was copied from an orignial sold by the Union Drummer Boy in Gettysburg. It features a silk cadeusus; the lenghtwise borders are patterned gold wire braid.

We have used top materials in this reproduction, Kochan Phillips wool broadcloth, and 100% gold wire braid. The cadeusus, as noted, is hand embroidered in 100% silk.

  • The individual thumbnail picture of each Chevron details the beautiful work of each piece.
