Gardner pattern, WOOD CANTEEN.

The Gardner pattern canteen was a common Confederate wood canteen issued all during the war in all theaters of the war. These are much lighter in weight than I expected and slightly larger than the Tin Drum canteen we offer. As seen in some of the photos, The Davisson made leather sling is a good fit for this canteen, not included but available on our site. I have included a few photos from the excellent book “CIVIL WAR CANTEENS “by Stephen Sylvia and Micheal O’Donnell so you can compare these outstanding replicas to some originals. Includes cork.
We only have six canteens in stock, and I do not know if or when I can get more.
***notes on wood products for storing water, before first use fill with water and allow it to sit full of water for up to 2 to 3 days then all leaks or seeping of water will stop, then store with water, changing out water for fresh water every 3 to 4 weeks to maintain water storing ability……If you will not be using canteen for a long time ,empty it , allow to dry without cork in it , then store un-corked. When ready to use again refill with water and a few days before use to allow the wood to expand again to make water tight.****
