There is 4” split base for US canteens. As well as a solid base for CS canteens. With 4 adjustment holes at the end and a double headed brass stud to fasten it together. Made by C.A. Davisson.
On the Virginia front, Confederates refurbished thousands of Federal canteens form battlefields generally removing damaged covers and using a new leather strap like one of these two styles, before issuing to a Confederate soldier.
